A Note From the Director’s Desk…

Dear Families and Appointed Advocates:

Another school year is behind us and a summer of adventure stretches ahead.  Don’t forget to reinforce the skills that your son or daughter, or the student for whom you serve as an advocate, learned from school this year.  It may mean going to the library, encouraging appropriate behavior, or giving them more responsibly.  BUT, always make sure there is a large measure of fun, too.

Another year has ended in Topeka, too - The Legislative Session.

The legislature struggled with funding for schools and for persons with disabilities throughout the session.  In the end, they appropriated a sizable increase for schools with some emphasis on Special Education programs, and additional money to make services to persons with disabilities more readily available.

During the session, I encouraged each of you to contact your legislator about the issues that affect your family.  Now it is time to say “Thank You” for the job they did.  Whether or not all the items on your list were fulfilled, would you write a short note to your representative and let them know that the money they spent on schools and services to persons with disabilities is appreciated?

If you don’t know who your representatives are, send the card to Families Together.  We will send it to the appropriate senator or representative.  Only a few minutes writing a thank you note can go a long way in encouraging the legislators to continue to support programs for children and persons with disabilities.

As soon as you finish your thank you note – you may go out to enjoy your summer!
