success for young people from foster care is rooted in an ongoing
journey connecting parents, caregivers, friends, mentors, advocates,
communities, schools, and employers. Specific tools and strategies
can help in this process. Expanding on the It’s My Life
transition framework, this practical, concise handbook is intended
for child welfare professionals and others responsible for helping
young people prepare for transition to adulthood and the workplace.

Respite for Foster Parents
- Foster families are expected to
care for one or more children who have experienced abuse, neglect,
abandonment, or drug or alcohol exposure. They also care for
children who have disabilities, who are medically fragile or HIV
positive. Many children in foster care demonstrate a significant
amount of emotional disturbance as a result of abuse or neglect
which can be very taxing for foster parents and their families.
